Highlights from 2013-2017 Strategic Plan


The recently completed 2013-2017 Strategic Plan focused on four major goals and achieved success in identifying and implementing a number of new initiatives at the Academy and the College. Particular highlights are included below.

I. Academic Excellence, Competitiveness, and Reputation

Salem Academy:

  • Successfully completed five-year SACS/SAIS re-accreditation process assessing all aspects of the Academy

  • Installed new database management system (Blackbaud)

  • Curricular enhancements including the addition of AP Computer Science, AP Physics, AP Art, and Chinese

Salem College:

  • Successfully launched competitive new academic programs including courses in Arabic language, a minor in professional writing, a bachelor of science degree in psychology, and a master of music degree in piano or organ performance and pedagogy with an emphasis in injury-preventive technique

  • Increased opportunities for the professional development and mentoring of faculty

  • Expanded academic support programs focused on student success including the expansion of the Director of Academic Support Services to full-time and expanded and enhanced programming in the residence halls

II. A Vibrant and Engaging Co-Curricular Environment

  • Created an Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Compliance that will provide training and programming for both the Academy and the College
  • Launched iLEAD, a four-year women's leadership program

  • Continued development of strong NCAA Division III athletic programs, including the addition of varsity lacrosse and membership in the USA South Athletic Conference

 III. Enhanced and Expanded Campus Facilities

  • Created a Campus Master Plan that respects the history and architecture of the Academy and the College and provides a roadmap for growth and improvement in support of the academic mission for the next twenty years

  • Acquired significant adjacent properties to increase the campus footprint

  • Completed and opened the Bert Lain Tennis Center which benefits both Academy and College students

  • Completed and opened the College's new Student Center

  • Completed and opened the McHugh Sisters Flats residence for College students

  • Acquired technology to enhance student experience, as well as technology to help the admissions process and development activities

IV. Continuing Growth in Financial Strength

  • Rebranded the annual fund to the Salem Academy and Salem College funds

  • Modified Society Giving Levels in Institutional Advancement
