Chair of Steering Committee Shares Strategic Planning Updates

Dear Members of the Salem Academy and College Community, 

I hope this finds you well. I write to update you on behalf of the Steering Committee regarding the progress of the strategic planning process. In January, you received an announcement from President Sterritt and Sallie Craig Huber, the chair of the Board of Trustees, noting the formation and membership of this group. As you’ll recall from that communication, the role of the Steering Committee is not to determine the final strategic directions for Salem, but oversee the activities in the planning process, advise on how best to engage members of the community, communicate progress in a clear and consistent manner and synthesize the information gathered during all phases. The role of the Steering Committee will then include framing the emergent themes into recommended strategic directions grounded in actionable opportunities that will be put before the Board for consideration. 

webpage dedicated to the strategic plan has recently been launched and I thank Ed Jones, Director of Communications and Public Relations, and his team for their excellent work in developing the page. We encourage you to refer to the page for information regarding the strategic planning process, including periodic updates from the Steering Committee.

Since launching this phase of Salem’s strategic planning 6 weeks ago, the process has included the compilation of relevant internal data, including information gathered by the earlier strategic planning committees, external demographic and trend data, and output from focus groups and interviews held with members of the Academy and College student body, faculty and staff. Our partners in this process, Jennifer Desjarlais and Ed Hudner from Cambridge Hill Partners, came to campus for two days in mid-February to meet with a broad range of constituents, but were certainly not able to meet with everyone. In order to include a further avenue for input, Ed will return to campus on Thursday, March 15 for a series of open forum events. 

I encourage you to review the following schedule and participate in the appropriate session. Your ideas, perspectives and thoughts will inform Salem’s strategic directions. I hope you can participate in one of the forums.

  • College staff -  8:30 am to 9:30 am 
  • Academy faculty and staff -  10:00 am to 11:00 am 
  • College faculty  -  12:30 pm to 1:30 pm 
  • Academy faculty and staff -  2:00 pm to 3:00 pm 
  • College students  - 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm 

 

If you are unable to participate in a forum on March 15, please be aware that there is an online feedback form on the strategic planning webpage where you can provide input.

Our goal is to complete our work by June 2018. We look forward to sharing more as the process continues.
